Oscar Wilde was an Andlo-Irish poet who lived in (October 16, 1854November 30, 1900). As the wikipedia states:

“Wilde studied classics at Trinity College, Dublin, from 1871 to 1874,  He was an outstanding student, and won the Berkeley Gold Medal, the highest award available to classics students at Trinity. He was granted a scholarship to Magdalen College, Oxford, where he continued his studies from 1874 to 1878 and where he became a part of the Aesthetic movement, one of its tenets being to make an art of life. While at Magdalen, he won the 1878 Newdigate Prize for his poem Ravenna, which he read out at Encaenia.”

Among his famous works were “The picture of Doran Gray”, “The Importance of Being Earnest”, “Lady Windemere’s Fan” and other plays.

I rea liked the story “The picture of Dorian Gray”. It talks about conscience and beaty. That it is impossible to be beutiful without having a clear conscience and beautiful heart.

Dorian Gray himself was first unaware of his beaty, however, the panter notices his beauty and tells him that. Dorain Gray doesnt give much thought to it but later he realizes his beauty and wishes that his portrait would become old and that he himsllf would never become old. So his face remains that same all 19 or so years but his heart and conscience are stained everyday.

The main idea is that as the painter has made a portrait of Dorian Gray, his picture becomes old and really ugly. However, Dorian Gray remains the same. In the end his portrait scares him so much that he decides to destroy it. However, as he plunges a knife into the portrait he falls dead and the picture is beautiful but he himself is lying dead on the floor ugly and old.

I guess its his conscience that he wanted to kill to that it woudn’t “nag” him all the time after he has done some terrible deed.

So when people try to live not according to their conscience or try to destroy it then they are dying. How terrible….
